Over the past year we have been working on our Preschool and Dog Program. We created a package to give to preschool teachers to use as a resource when working on child and dog safety with their students.

In this project we focused on 5 topics:

Topic 1:  Talking to children about dogs

Topic 2:  Looking after dogs

  • Feeding and grooming your dog
  • Playing with your dog with / without toys
  • Walking your pet dog

Topic 3:  How best to interact with dogs

Topic 4:  Body language

  • Happy dog (playful, relaxed and friendly)
  • Scared dog (submissive)
  • Anxious dog (fearful)
  • Angry dog (aggressive)image: dog with leash
  • Guarding, alert

Topic 5:  Meeting dogs outside

  • Dog is on leash
  • Dog is off leash

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP

We are currently developing several programs to encourage responsible dog ownership:

Fido, Friend or Foe?

By Etta Agan Bradecamp, DVM, DACT, DABVP and Joanna Burnette Freeman, DVM,
and recently updated in conjunction with RDOC.

RDOC proudly announces the publication of our updated activity book on Dog Safety,
"Fido, Friend or Foe?" which is available below in pdf format, in both French and English. There are lots of colouring pages that can be printed from the pdf file, as well as important safety information to be aware of when children and dogs are together.

The purpose of this activity book is to teach children how to act responsibly and safely around dogs. It can be used as a starting point to talk to children about bite prevention.

The book includes several informative illustrations that can be printed out and coloured.

32 pages, available in English and French

Our Kids Activity Page is a spin-off from our booklet "Fido, Friend or Foe?"

This page is for all you kids who are interested in learning about dogs, how to help look after your own pet dog, and how to be safe around dogs.

Have fun and enjoy the activities. There is a lot to learn. Please keep coming back. We will put something new on this page regularly.

Parents:  There is a lot of information on child safety around dogs in the links at the bottom of this page.
